Do not wait

Early intervention produces significantly better outcomes. Dysphagia does not resolve on its own — every week without treatment increases the risk of aspiration pneumonia, malnutrition, and deterioration.

Therapy at home is where real outcomes are achieved

The chair, the food, the routine, the family dynamic — all of it visible to the therapist, all of it part of the treatment. What a clinic appointment misses in an hour, a home session captures in the first five minutes.

Tracheostomy, speaking valves, and post-ICU swallowing

When the airway and digestive tract cannot be managed separately — patients of all ages with tracheostomy, post-extubation dysphagia, and complex swallowing disorders. Enayati's SLPs work directly alongside the ICU-background nursing team from the hospital at home programme.

Passy Muir Valve — speaking valve

Assessment, fitting, and rehabilitation for adults and children. The PMV is a one-way speaking valve that fits onto the tracheostomy tube hub. Learn more at passy-muir.com.

Post-extubation dysphagia (PED)

Endotracheal tube intubation causes direct trauma to the larynx and pharynx. Enayati's SLPs assess and rehabilitate PED as part of the direct ICU-to-home discharge pathway.

Paediatric tracheostomy

Specialist speaking valve assessment and fitting for children with tracheostomy — including PMV trials, communication rehabilitation, and decannulation readiness evaluation.

Above cuff vocalisation (ACV)

For ventilated patients with a cuffed tracheostomy tube. ACV enables speech without full cuff deflation. Enayati's SLPs and ICU-background nurses coordinate ACV trials.

Emergency airway safety — UK NTSP algorithm

Our team follows the National Tracheostomy Safety Project Emergency Algorithm — the UK gold standard adopted by the NHS.

Dysphagia, neurological and speech and language

Dysphagia rehabilitation, neurological communication disorders, voice, fluency, AAC — and preserving swallowing health in older adults.

Dysphagia — causes we manage at home

Stroke
Parkinson's disease
Myasthenia Gravis
ALS / Motor Neurone Disease
Multiple Sclerosis
Traumatic brain injury
Head and neck cancer
Post-ICU discharge
Dementia
Guillain-Barré syndrome
Post-radiotherapy dysphagia
Prolonged intubation

Myasthenia Gravis — a diagnostic opportunity

A meal-length swallowing assessment that identifies fatigable weakness may be the first step toward diagnosing undiagnosed Myasthenia Gravis.

Dysphagia treatment techniques

Oral health Enteral feeding support Bolus modification — IDDSI Body positioning Chin tuck — chin down Head tilt Head rotation Facial exercises Oral motor exercises Tongue strength — IOPI Facial Oral Tract Therapy — FOTT Masako — tongue hold Supraglottic swallow Super-supraglottic swallow Effortful swallow Mendelsohn's manouvre Shaker exercise — head lift Chin tuck against resistance — CTAR Expiratory muscle strength training — EMST Thermal tactile stimulation Neuromuscular electrical stimulation — NMES Surface EMG biofeedback — sEMG Patient and family education

Preserving swallowing health in older adults — presbyphagia

Age-related swallowing changes are preventable. Enayati's SLPs work with elderly patients on CTAR, Shaker, EMST, oral health, hydration, meal posture, and eating environment. Rossi et al. 2026.

ABA vs speech therapy — the difference

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and Speech Language Pathology are two separate professions that frequently work with the same children. ABA focuses on behaviour and communication motivation. Speech Language Pathology focuses on the mechanics and language of communication itself.

Frequently asked questions

Early — ideally before discharge from hospital. Dysphagia does not resolve on its own — delayed intervention increases the risk of aspiration pneumonia, malnutrition, and dehydration.
They are the same profession — different titles used in different countries. SLP is used in North America and Australia. SLT is used in the UK and Europe. In the UAE, licensed by DHA under the Allied Health licensing framework.
Coughing after water indicates thin liquid aspiration. Coughing after food suggests pharyngeal residue. Silent aspiration — with no cough — is the highest risk and identified only through instrumental assessment such as FEES or videofluoroscopy.
ABA and SLP are two separate professions that frequently work with the same autistic children. ABA focuses on behaviour. SLP focuses on the communication itself. In adult neurological care — ABA has no role whatsoever.
Swallowing is a neuromuscular function — it weakens with disuse and age (presbyphagia). Prevention: daily swallowing exercises (CTAR, effortful swallow, EMST), twice-daily oral hygiene, minimum 1.5 litres fluid daily, sitting fully upright at 90 degrees during all meals.
No. The blue dye test has a high false negative rate — it misses up to 50% of aspiration events. ASHA does not recommend it as a primary swallowing assessment tool. Enayati's SLPs use evidence-based assessment methods.
Post-extubation dysphagia (PED) occurs when endotracheal intubation causes direct trauma to the larynx and pharynx. With appropriate rehabilitation, most patients show significant improvement. Early SLP assessment is associated with faster recovery.
